WTA rankings update: Iga Swiatek maintains dominance at World No. 1 after Italian Open win, Danielle Collins inches closer to Top-10 return
Iga Swiatek has maintained her dominance at World No. 1 in the WTA rankings after her win at the Italian Open in Rome. Danielle Collins has inched closer to the top-10 return after her SF (semifinals) run at the tournament.
Swiatek had a dominant run at the Italian Open, which she won without dropping a single set. The Pole made easy work of Aryna Sabalenka in the final, winning 6-2, 6-3. She is currently 3557 points ahead of the Belarusian, who is currently the World No. 2. Swiatek is currently in her 104th week at the World No. 1.
Collins, who won the Miami Open this year, is the most improved player in the latest WTA Rankings among the top-15, having moved three places to No. 12 in the world. The American reached the semifinals of the Italian Open and is currently just 170 points behind the Top 10.
There have hardly been any changes in the Top 10 of the WTA rankings, apart from the fact that Maria Sakkari rose a spot to seventh while Zheng Qinwen went down to eighth. The gap between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka is still quite narrow, with the Belarusian just 500 points ahead of the American.
Elena Rybakina remained fourth but she lost 1000 points due to her inability to compete at the Italian Open, thus losing her winners' points from 2023.
Diana Shnaider and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova gain the most in WTA Rankings
Diana Shnaider of Russia and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia have gained the most among Top-100 players in the latest WTA Rankings. Both players climbed 15 spots, with Shnaider at 47th while Schmiedlova is 53rd.
Shnaider won her maiden WTA Title at the Trophee Clarins, a WTA-125 clay court event, held at Paris, this year. She defeated Emma Navarro of the US 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the finals of the tournament on May 19. Interestingly, Shnaider beat former No. 1 Venus Williams of the US in straight sets in the opening round of the Miami Open this year.
Similarly, Schmiedlova won the Parma Ladies Open, a WTA-125 event, beating Mayar Sherif of Egypt 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, in the finals for her first tour-level title in singles.
Among other players, Elina Svitolina's run to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open saw her rise two spots up to 17th while Victoria Azarenka rose to 21st.
