Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen will lock horns in the 2024 Wuhan Open final on Sunday. The duo came through contrasting wins on Saturday to book their respective spots in the summit clash.
The Belarusian took the scenic route against Coco Gauff. She went down a set against the recently crowned China Open winner, but made the most of her opponent’s serving woes to fight her way and prevail 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a topsy-turvy match.
In an incredible stat, Sabalenka has never lost a match in three appearances in Wuhan. She had lifted back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019 and will play for a third consecutive trophy on Sunday.
Earlier in the week, she was also tested by Yulia Putintseva in the round-of-16 but managed to prevail in three sets. She has also scored straight-set wins over the likes of Magdalena Frech and Katerina Siniakova.
Zheng Qinwen, meanwhile, has carried home hopes with aplomb all week. The Chinese player opened her campaign with a convincing win over Jaqueline Cristina before battling past Leylah Fernandez for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Pitted against fellow top-10 player Jasmine Paolini, Qinwen was again tested but came through in a tight three-set encounter. She was in top form during her semifinal, ousting compatriot Wang Xinyu in straight sets.
