"You've let yourself go in retirement"- Andy Murray jokingly calls out Roger Federer as Swiss icon indulges in New York pizza during US Open 2024 trip
Andy Murray jokingly called out Roger Federer who was pictured indulging in a New York pizza during his trip to the Big Apple for the 2024 US Open. Murray suggested that the Swiss was getting a bit too comfortable in retirement.
Federer attended the US Open night session at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday, September 3. He witnessed the women's singles quarterfinals between Aryna Sabalenka and Zheng Qinwen and the men's singles quarterfinal between Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov.
The Swiss later took to Instagram to give his followers a few glimpses of his trip.
The first image on his post was of him indulging in a giant slice of pizza. Murray jokingly commented:
"Wow, you've really let yourself go in retirement. What a shame"
Federer retired in 2022 after participating in the Laver Cup. Meanwhile, Murray embraced retirement over a month ago after playing his final professional tennis match in the men's doubles event at the Paris Olympics.
"I was always his number one fan and supporter" - Roger Federer ahead of Andy Murray's retirement
Andy Murray's farewell tour began at Wimbledon this year when he received an emotional ceremony after losing in the men's doubles first round. The ceremony was attended by multiple tennis stars including Iga Swiatek, Novak Djokovic, Jack Draper, John McEnroe, and Martina Navratilova.
Roger Federer could not attend the ceremony but met the Brit and sent his best wishes. In an interview with the BBC at the time, Federer said he was Murray's number 1 fan.
"I was always his number one fan and supporter that he should be doing what he thinks is right and what he feels in his heart of hearts he should be doing, so I'm happy that he kept on going," Federer said.
"I wish I could have been there last night, I saw him quickly before the doubles, I went to see him in the fitness room and then I actually flew in on Tuesday morning in case he played the singles so I was here for that."
Murray had withdrawn from the singles event but played the men's doubles with his brother Jamie at Wimbledon.
The 37-year-old also withdrew from singles at the Paris Olympics and officially retired after losing in the quarterfinal of the men's doubles at the Games against USA's Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul.
