2014 US Open: Nick Kyrgios ousts Mikhail Youzhny in the first round
New York, Aug 26 (IANS) Australian Nick Kyrgios took down No. 21 seed Mikhail Youzhny at the 2014 US Open men's singles opening round. The 19-year-old sent the Russian packing with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory Monday.
"I was struggling a little bit about the two-and-a-half hour mark, but I knew that if I hung in I would get that second wind where I could start playing good tennis again," said Kyrgios after the match, "and that's what happened in the fourth set".
Kyrgios became known to the world after beating world No.1 Rafael Nadal 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3 in the Wimbledon fourth round. He was the first wild card to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals on debut since Florian Mayer in 2004, and the youngest player to reach the quarters at a Grand Slam championship since compatriot Tomic (18 years, 255 days) at 2011 Wimbledon.
The world number 60 will take on Andreas Seppi in the second round.
