Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer to win his third Wimbledon title
Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 7-6 (1), 6-7 (10), 6-4, 6-3 to win his second Wimbledon title in a row.
It was the 40th meeting between Federer and Djokovic with the Swiss leading 20-19.
Federer won the toss and chose to serve like he did in his match against Andy Murray in the semifinal. He held his serve to love and got the first break in the sixth game when Djokovic netted a low backhand. The advantage didn’t stay with Federer as Djokovic broke right back as Federer netted a forehand volley. It was only the second time that Federer’s serve was broken in the Championships.
Djokovic held his serve in the twelfth game with an ace sending the first set into a tie-break. Federer double faulted on set point to trail by a set.
Both players served brilliantly in the second set with Federer hitting 24 impressive winners. Djokovic was again frugal with unforced errors, committing just 8 of them. Both players won 51 points in the set, but it was Federer who saved seven set points in an incredible tie-break to level the match at one set apiece.
Djokovic broke Federer again in the third game when the Swiss made a horrendous forehand error. Djokovic was solid on his serve giving very little chance for Federer to make any comeback in the thirs set. After notching up three set points in the tenth game, he led two sets to one with a superb smash.
Djokovic hit a brilliant return on Federer’s serve in the fifth game and Federer sent a backhand wide to trail by a break. It was not long before Djokovic had two Championship points in the ninth game on Federer’s serve.
A forehand winner in the deep left corner gives Djokovic his third Wimbledon title taking his Grand Slam tally to 9.
