Novak Djokovic defeats compatriot Laslo Djere in 2nd round of the 2022 Serbia Open
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic battled into the quarterfinals of the Serbia Open with a 2-6, 7-6(6), 7-6(4) win against compatriot Laslo Djere on Wednesday. In the first meeting between the two players, Djokovic lost the first set in tame fashion, but bounced back to win the next two in nail-biting tie-breaks.
Djere took the first set with relative ease 6-2 as Djokovic struggled with unforced errors. However, Djokovic has a tendency to make extraordinary comebacks after losing the first set and that was on full display on Wednesday as the Serb clawed his way back into the contest.
The second set was a close one with plenty of changes in momentum. Djokovic went down a break in the middle of the set, but broke Djere's serve back immediately. Djokovic managed to reach set point on Djere's serve, but squandered multiple of them to finally take the set in a tie-break.
While the Serbian World No. 1 managed to hold on, the second set went to a tie-break, which he won.
The third set continued to be a close affair. While Djere's level dropped in the third and he began making more errors, Djokovic improved and started hitting with more consistency from the back of the court.
Djokovic won a phenomenal point to tie the third set at 4-4, but he could not use the momentum to break Djere's serve.
The end of the third set was thrilling as the pendulum swung one way and then the other.
In the ensuing tie-break, Djere opened up a 4-3 lead, but netted a straightforward forehand, which led to his downfall. He dropped the last four points to give Djokovic the win after a marathon three-hour affair.
Novak Djokovic faces Miomir Kecmanovic next as he builds momentum ahead of Roland Garros
Djokovic will continue his campaign at the Serbia Open against Miomir Kecmanovic in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Kecmanovic, also from Serbia, has been playing some good tennis lately, with several quarterfinal runs this year, most recently at the Sunshine Double.
He lost to eventual champions Taylor Fritz and Carlos Alcaraz in both tournaments.
