Novak Djokovic history at Shanghai Masters: All you need to know
Novak Djokovic has confirmed his participation at the Shanghai Masters 2024. The Serbian star is thus set to compete at the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai for the first time since 2019.
Djokovic is the most successful player in the history of Shanghai Masters. The 37-year-old has won four titles in Shanghai since the tournament's inception in 2009. Andy Murray with three titles and Roger Federer with two are the next two most successful players.
Novak Djokovic will go into the Shanghai Masters after a disappointing outing at the US Open. After his third-round exit at Flushing Meadows, the Serbian said he would choose tournaments to compete in and took a little break after his outing in New York. Most recently, Djokovic competed in the Davis Cup for Serbia and registered a win to boost his confidence.
Djokovic won his maiden Shanghai Masters title in 2012 after defeating Murray in the final. The Serbian saved five match points to come back from a set down before winning the match 5-7, 7-6 (11), 6-3. That match is regarded by many as one of the greatest ATP Masters finals of all time.
In 2013, Djokovic successfully defended his Shanghai Masters title by defeating Juan Martin del Potro in the final. The defending champion needed three sets to get past the Argentine star and won the match 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3).
After back-to-back title wins in 2012 and 2013, Djokovic won his third Shanghai Masters title in 2015 after beating Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the final. The Serbian won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to lift the Shanghai Masters title again.
In 2018, Djokovic moved past Murray's record of three Shanghai Masters titles. He defeated Borna Coric 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets to clinch his fourth and most recent Shanghai Masters title.
Djokovic has been one of the best players in Shanghai, winning four titles over his career. The Serbian has won 40 matches while losing 8, with a win percentage of 83%. Now, Djokovic is set to return to the Shanghai Masters after a gap of five years.
Novak Djokovic receives tough draw at Shanghai Masters 2024
Novak Djokovic has been given a tough draw in his quest to win the Shanghai Masters for the 5th time. The Serbian star is returning to Shanghai for the first time since 2019, aiming to win his first ATP title of the season.
Djokovic has been given a bye in the first round and could face one of the unseeded players in the second round. In the third round, Djokovic could face his old rival Stan Wawrinka or the Italian hot-shot Flavio Cobolli.
The Serbian's draw gets tougher from the fourth round where he will face either Frances Tiafoe or Alexander Bublik.
A potential quarterfinal clash with Andrey Rublev or Grigor Dimitrov could be on the Serbian's horizon. If Djokovic does manage to make it into the semi-final, the 37-year-old will potentially face German star Alexander Zverev.
Looking further ahead, a tough match against Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner could await Djokovic in the final.
The Serbian thus has a tough draw to navigate in his attempt to win a record 5th Shanghai Masters title.
