Coco Gauff vs Maria Carle preview
Second seed and one of the favorites to win the gold at the Paris Olympics, Coco Gauff will take on Argentina's Maria Carle in the second round. Gauff has a record of 35-13 record for the season, with one title to her name after winning the ASB Classic in January this year. The young American sensation, however, is coming on the back of a shock fourth-round Wimbledon loss against compatriot Emma Navarro.
However, Gauff was in great form in the clay season. Her record on red dirt is 13-4 in 2024. She reached the semifinals of the Italian Open and the French Open. On both occasions, she lost against Iga Swiatek. At the Paris Olympics, Gauff started her campaign with a confident 6-3, 6-0 win over Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round.
Maria Carle has an overall 28-15 record for the 2024 season, but that comes from mostly playing at WTA 125 events and on the ITF Tour. However, Carle has won titles on the clay at both the WTA 125 level as well as the ITF events.
On the WTA Tour, Carle's most impressive performance came at the Madrid Open. She won four successive matches from the qualifiers to reach the round of 32. She defeated a former grand slam champion Emma Raducanu in the competition, before losing against Jelena Ostapenko. Carle demolished Tatjana Maria 6-0, 6-0 in her opening-round match at the Paris Olympics.

At Roland Garros, Gauff has an 80 percent win ratio, making it to finals in 2022, and making it at least till the quarter-finals in the last four editions.
Carle is a player who has yet to make a mark on the WTA tour. However, her form on the clay has been good this year. However, the competition level at the WTA 125 and the ITF tours is not as high as the WTA tour.
