Post Wimbledon ranking scenarios

Federer could drop out of top 4 for the first time in 10 years

The most epic Grand Slam of the year kicks off today. Wimbledon is considered to be the most prestigious of the four Slams and winning it is the biggest aspiration of any player. With the draws already out, the tensions have already gripped in. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have been placed in the same draw assuring the competition to be really tough, especially for the defending champion Roger Federer who may have to face Rafael Nadal early in the quarter-finals provided no upsets take place. If no upsets are there till the quarter-final, the probable quarter-final draws can be predicted as:

- Djokovic vs Berdych
- Ferrer vs del Potro
- Murray vs Tsonga
- Nadal vs Federer

Furthermore, the semifinal draws can be predicted as: Djokovic vs Ferrer, Murray vs Nadal/Federer.

If we go by the no upset assumption, the following ranking scenarios could develop post Wimbledon:

  • If Federer is unable to defend his title, he drops out of the top 4 for the first time in 10 years to number 5 and even with the victory he goes down to number 4. In an unlikely event – if Berdych beats Nole in the quarters, Federer falls down to number 6.
  • If Rafael Nadal makes it to the final, he retains his World Number 2 spot.
  • Whatever happens, Djokovic will retain the top spot even if he looses in the quarter-finals.
  • David Ferrer can reach to number 2 spot if he reaches as far as semis, provided Nadal does not go past quarter-finals.
  • Andy Murray will retain number 2 spot, on a condition that Federer does not win and Nadal does not enter the finals.

All the excitement starts building up tomorrow and maybe some major upsets could also pave the way for these top ranked players. The draw seems to be quite relaxed for Djockovic while Federer’s and Nadal’s draws are exciting and puts in a lot of nervousness in the minds of the players also. The Championships will surely live up to the excitement and the grass season will surely wrap up n a great note.
