Three-time Major champion Andy Murray will take on Jordan Thompson in the second round of the 2024 Cinch Championships on Wednesday.
Murray was drawn against Alexei Popyrin in the first round here, which was also his milestone 1000th career match. The Brit snagged a break in the closing stages of the first set which sealed the set in his favor.
Murray quickly went down a break in the second set and remained on the backfoot for the rest of it. He saved a set point on his serve to make it 5-3 but Popyrin managed to serve out the set in the following game.
The former World No. 1 struck first in the decider to go 3-0 up. He didn't let Popyrin stage a comeback despite his younger rival's best efforts and won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Thompson was up against seventh seed Holger Rune in the first round. Neither player got close to a break point for most of the first set. However, one sloppy game is all it takes for the tide to turn.
Thompson fumbled while serving to stay in the set at 5-4 as Rune broke his serve to claim the set. The two remained rock-solid on serve in the second set, leading to a tie-break. The Australian gained the upper hand in it to clinch the set.
Thompson landed the first blow in the deciding set as he took the lead courtesy of an early break. He didn't allow Rune to catch up to him and won the match 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Both players arrived at Queen's Club in the same boat. Murray was on a four-match losing streak and had lost his first match of the grass season at last week's Boss Open. Thompson had lost his last five matches, including his opening-round duel at the Libema Open to begin the grass swing.
The duo dug deep to register three-set victories and snap their losing streaks. Thompson edged out Murray to win their only match at the ATP level, which took place at this very venue seven years ago. However, their most recent encounter took place on grass at the Challenger level at last year's Surbiton Trophy, which was won by the Brit.
Murray hasn't been in great form all year, and his win over Popyrin was his sixth of the season. However, he remains a force to be reckoned with on grass, and given Thompson's recent inconsistent performances, the Brit does have a shot at victory.
