The first round of the Cinch Championships in 2024 will feature seventh seed Holger Rune against Jordan Thompson of Australia. Rune's 2024 season has been underwhelming as the Dane has slipped out of the top 10 rankings on the ATP circuit.

Rune is yet to make a final on the grass, but he had a decent showing on the surface last year. At the Queen's championships, he reached the semis, losing to Alex de Minaur. Rune also made a decent run at last year's Wimbledon, making it to the quarter-finals, losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
Jordan Thompson has had a good first half of the season. He made it to the semi-finals of the Brisbane International, losing to Dimitrov. After successive quarter-finals at the Dallas Open and at Delray Beach, Thompson won the title at the Los Cabos Open, beating Casper Ruud in the finals.
Reaching the quarter-finals at Houston was the best result on the European clay for the Australian, where he lost to Francis Tiafoe. Thompson had a decent grass court season in 2023 that included a final at the Libema Open where he lost to Tallon Griekspoor. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round at Wimbledon. However this year, Thompson exited after the first round at the Libema Open, losing to Milos Raonic.
