Sebastian Korda vs Rinky Hijikata preview
Sebastian Korda will lock horns with Rinky Hijikata in the quarterfinals of the 2024 cinch Championships on Friday, June 21.
Korda has seen a rich vein of form on the grass so far this year. He opened his campaign in 's-Hertogenbosch last week, sweeping aside Tristan Schoolkate, Luca Nardi, Tommy Paul, and Tallon Griekspoor. He made it to the final without dropping even a single set. However, top seed Alex de Minaur proved too strong for him and went on to seal a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win.
Korda opened his Queen's campaign against Karen Khachanov with a routing 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory. In the second round, he met third seed Grigor Dimitrov. The first two sets were split by the pair on the back of one service break each. In the decider, Korda jumped to an early lead but Dimitrov fought back almost immediately to level the score at 2-2. However, the American broke once more in the final game to set up an emphatic 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win.
Hijikata opened his grasscourt campaign last week, in 's-Hertogenbosch. Unfortunately, he went down in his opening match to compatriot Alexei Popyrin in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
He entered Queen's as a qualifier and got the better of local stars Henry Searle and Arthur Rinderknech to seal a berth in the main draw. Up against Frances Tiafoe in his opener, Hijikata emerged victorious after Tiafoe was forced to retire hurt with the score at 7-5, 4-6, 1-0. Sebastian Korda vs Rinky Hijikata prediction
Although Sebastian Korda might start as the favorite against Rinky Hijikata, one can't rule out a surprise from the Aussie given the form he has been in.
Hijikata's strong form has continued onto the grass courts this season. He might have started slowly, but his latest victories against Tiafoe and Arnaldi speak volumes of his talent and skill. His serve and back-of-the-court play have been particularly impressive. He is also unafraid to approach the net, a tactic that has already paid dividends in this tournament.
Korda has also been playing some exceptional tennis lately, so he will be a tough opponent to defeat. He's excelled from the back of the court and at the net, displaying his all-round prowess. His serve has also been impressive, giving him free points on a consistent basis.
Korda should make it through this encounter with relative ease given his superior match fitness and experience on the bigger stage. Hijikata will have to piece together a monumental match if he is to challenge the American.
Pick: Korda in straight sets.
