Roger Federer - A year for extending and creating records

2016 Brisbane International - Day 6

Roger Federer -The Legend continues to break records

It seems like every time Roger Federer plays and wins, he is matching or breaking records. He has so many records it is hard to keep track of all he has. This year he has already set numerous records after winning the Australian Open and then, the Rotterdam Open. Here are some more records which either may be extended or are within his reach and may be attained this year.

  1. Most weeks at No 1 - He is already the record holder and will look to extend his 303 weeks as much as he can
  2. Oldest World No 1 - He is already the record holder and every day extends his record
  3. Most Grand Slams - He is already the record holder with 20 Slams and will look to extend that record
  4. Most Wimbledon Titles - He is already the record holder with 8 titles and will definitely be prepared to win his 9th one
  5. Most US Open Titles - He shares the record of 5 titles with Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras and will be gunning for his 6th title
  6. Most ATP 500 Titles - He is already the record holder with 20 titles and is expected to play 2-3 more ATP 500 tournaments this year
  7. Most ATP 1000 Titles - He is in 2nd place with 27 titles behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal who both have 30 titles. If he successfully defends the 3 ATP 1000 titles he won last year, then he will also reach 30.
  8. Most Indian Wells Titles - He shares the record of 5 titles with Novak Djokovic and if he successfully defends his title he will move into sole first place
  9. Most Sunshine Doubles - The Sunshine Double is winning both Indian Wells and the Miami Open. He has completed the Sunshine Double 3 times and if he completes it this year then he will share the record of 4 Sunshine Doubles with Novak Djokovic
  10. Most Match Wins - Jimmy Connors leads the pack with 1256 career wins which is 112 wins ahead of second place Federer with 1144 wins. He will not reach that record this year but if he has a similar year to 2017 where he won 52 matches then he will close the gap by almost half.
  11. Most ATP Titles - Jimmy Connors again leads the pack with 109 and Federer knows he cannot catch Connors this year as he is 12 titles behind on 97. Federer will look to reach 100 titles this year.
  12. Year-End No 1 - He is a five-time year-end No1 and if he finishes the year as No 1 then he will match Pete Sampras's record of 6 year-end No 1 finishes.
  13. Oldest Year-End No 1 - If he finishes the year as No 1 then he will break Rafael Nadal's record of the oldest year-end No 1. Nadal was 31 years old and Federer will be 37 by the end of the year.

There are many other records that can be matched or broken this year. On the tournament side, he can extend his records of most Cincinnati Masters titles, most Halle titles, and most Basel titles. The fact that Federer is 36 years old means he can be the oldest player to win the titles; for instance, he is already the oldest person to win the Miami Open. If he wins the US Open, he will be the oldest player to ever win a Grand Slam. Ken Rosewall won the 1972 Australian Open at 37 years and 63 days old. If he ends the year as No 1, it will be the longest gap between year-end finishes. There are just too many to list down.

If the Swiss Legend continues to play for the next 2-3 years, as he has planned and he can maintain his health and form, then look forward to many more records to fall.
