Video: That moment when Roger Federer didn't realize he won the match!
Roger Federer is back on grass, which means he’s back to winning matches comfortably. He has coasted through a relatively easy draw at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle (a tournament that he has won a record six times), and faced his first real challenge today, in the semifinal against Kei Nishikori.
Federer doused the threat of the young Japanese player, winning in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4). But was it almost too routine for Roger? As the clip below shows, the Swiss Maestro actually didn’t realize that he had won the match!
Federer had two match points at 6-4 in the second set tie-breaker, and then served and volleyed a ball that Nishikori could only hit into the net. The match, obviously, ended there, but both Federer and Nishikori seemed unaware of that, as they both started walking back to the baseline.
It took someone on the court to point out the conclusion of the match for Federer to realize he had won! He then indulged in a hearty, albeit delayed, celebration, much to the amusement of the crowd.
