Roger Federer sets another milestone with 300 wins in ATP 1000 Masters tournaments
Most number of wins
Roger Federer has plenty of records to his name, but he never gets tired of creating new ones! He lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Toronto Masters, where he was denied his 80th title on the tour.
The swiss maestro did not let that loss affect him as he beat Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-2 in the Western and Southern Open at Cincinnati to register 300 match wins at the ATP 1000 masters events. He is aiming for his sixth title in the desert town. Incidentally, his 200th match win also came in Cincinnati when he beat Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals.
“The Masters 1000s are the backbone of the tour,” said Federer. “I know a lot of people talk about the Grand Slams; we care dearly about them, but the majority of the tournaments are Masters 1000s, 500s or 250s,” Federer said.
“We have a certain obligation to play the 1000s, and I think that’s why they’re so popular, that’s why the people show up because they know that the best players will most likely play. I have a few exempts because I’ve been on tour for a very long time so I don’t have to always play, but I choose to because they’re very prestigious and I love playing them, so I’m happy I’m here,”he added.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion admitted that he found it tough in the early stages of his career. "I was one of those guys who struggled early on in the Masters 1000," said Federer. "I know how hard it is to win all these matches because it's always against Top 50 players, if not Top 20, if not Top 10. From that standpoint I'm obviously happy that it is at 300. It's nice."
The No. 2 seed, Federer will face Frenchman Gael Monfils in the third round on Thursday night.
