Roger Federer survives early scare in Brisbane Open

Roger Federer plays a forehand in his win over John Millman in the first round of Brisbane International

Roger Federer was taken the distance by Aussie John Millman in his first match of the season at the Brisbane International. The Swiss made 21 unforced errors in the first set as Millman took the set 6-4. Millman, ranked No. 153 in the world led 3-1 in the second set and looked like running away with the match. Federer broke back and came back from 0/40 down to even things at 3-3.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion broke Millman’s serve again in the seventh game before taking the set 6-3. Millman was spurred on by home fans which included his family and friends. The Swiss maestro used all his experience to outlast the tiring Millman to reach another quarterfinals in Brisbane.

"I was under a lot of pressure - I think I got quite lucky in the second set," Federer said. "He was playing great tennis until the last couple of games … It's the start of the season - I never know what to expect. I was just happy to win."

Federer takes on another Australian wildcard, James Duckworth in the last eight.
