Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan rise in ATP rankings after Maharashtra Open win

Following their title win at the Tata Open Maharashtra in Pune last week, both Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan rose in the latest world rankings released by the ATP on Monday, January 7, 2019.

Bopanna made a jump of five spots to reach No. 32 in the doubles rankings. Divij Sharan too surged three places to equal his career-high ranking of No. 36 that he had first attained in July last year.

This is the first ATP Tour title for the new team, who joined forces for the first time last year to conquer the Asian Games. That success inspired them to give the partnership a try in the new season. In their first ATP tournament together, they won four matches and even had to save multiple match points on their way to the title.

For both, the Pune glory ended a long wait for an ATP title. While Bopanna's last triumph was at Vienna in 2017, the left-handed Sharan had last tasted success at Antwerp the same year.

Leander Paes too climbed up a couple of places to 61 after reaching the quarter-finals at the Maharashtra Open. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Purav Raja stayed at the 74th and 90th positions respectively.

In ATP singles rankings, no Indian is inside the top 100. Prajnesh Gunneswaran continues to be the highest-ranked player from India and he slipped a couple of rungs to 112th after bowing out in the first round at Pune.

While Ramkumar Ramanathan maintains his 132nd ranking, Yuki Bhambri has dropped to 140th as he recovers from an injury niggle. Saketh Myneni has soared four spots to 255th following his two wins in qualifying at the Maharashtra Open last week.

On the women’s side, Ankita Raina is the World No. 204 in singles and is followed by Karman Thandi just two places behind her. In doubles, Raina is placed at the 159th position while Thandi is 184th.
