The Belgian entered Rosmalen after a first round exit in Paris. She weathered the storm by cruising past Maria Sakkari and Yuan Yue in the initial few rounds and then defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semifinal. Mertens humbled the second seed Alexandrova in two hours and 49 minutes, 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-4.
Meanwhile, Elena-Gabriela Ruse has revived her season in Rosmalen. After a second round exit in Melbourne, she reached the third round in Miami and the semifinals in Rouen. Despite a spirited performance against Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian defeated her in Rouen, 6-0, 6-2.
Ruse entered Rosmalen after second round exits in Rome and Paris. She started her campaign by breezing past Carson Branstine and Bianca Andreescu in the initial few rounds and then brushed aside Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the semifinal.
