Sania Mirza leads India to Fed Cup win over arch rivals Pakistan
Newly crowned women’s doubles world number one Sania Mirza led the Indian team to a convincing win over neighbours and arch rivals Pakistan in their Asia/Oceania Group II Fed Cup tie.
Prarthana Thombare kicked things off, by registering 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sara Mansoor. India’s top ranked singles player Ankita Raina also dispatched off her opponent Usna Suhail in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-1.
India’s playing Captain Sania Mirza didn’t even need to play as India secured the victory, before the doubles rubbers. The 29-year old returned from the United States, hours before the Fed Cup tie.
The final match of the day saw Natasha Palha team up with Pratana Thombare to inflict a 6-0, 6-4 defeat on Iman Quershi and Ushna Suhail 6-0, 6-4.
In other results, Philippines comfortably defeated Singapore in Pool A. Pool B saw Iran defeat Kyrgyzstan.
