Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis take title at St. Petersburg, 40th straight win
The top-ranked women’s doubles pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won the the title at the St Petersburg Ladies Tournament in Russia today, beating the Russian-Czech pair of Vera Dushevina and Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets – 6-3, 6-1 to take their fourth title of the season.
The title at St. Petersburg comes on the heels of their Australian Open women’s doubles win, a first for Mirza and a fifth for Martina Hingis. Prior to the Grand Slam, the two won titles at the year-opening Brisbane International, defeating eventual Australian Open singles champion Angelique Kerber and partner Andrea Petkovic in straight sets.
They followed that up with a title win at the Apia International in Sydney, the finals of which saw them win their 30th consecutive match, surpassing the most recently held streak of 28 consecutive match wins by Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva.
Mirza and Hingis are now on the verge of surpassing the previous record held by the all-Czech combine of Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova, who together had 44 match wins.
The all-time record, however, stands with the American pair of Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver who, individually and together, are regarded as amongst the greatest in the history of the game. The pair won 109 matches on the trot between 1983 and 1985, and have a Calendar Slam together.
