Sania Mirza-Martina Hingis book quarterfinal spot at the 2016 Australian Open
The Indo-Swiss duo of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis continued their march at the 2016 Australian Open, defeating the pair of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Roberta Vinci in straight sets 6-1 6-3 in the third round to progress through to the quarterfinals.
The opening set saw the pair win 65% of their 1st serve points and have the upper hand in the second serve points as well, winning 55% of the points on the latter as compared to 40 % for their opponents.
They also managed to convert 2 out of the 6 break point opportunities that came their way and won a total of 39 points as compared to 28 in the set.
The second set unfolded in similar fashion to the 1st as the pair, despite a minor hiccup here or there, maintained a tight grip over proceedings not allowing the Russian-Italian pair any opportunity to control the match any point and eventually romping to a 6-3 set win, that included 23 winners, 3 break point conversions and 37 points to their credit.
This is Mirza and Hingis’s maiden Australian Open campaign and they certainly seem to be on track to winning the competition in their maiden attempt itself. Also, this is now the pair’s 33rd consecutive win and they are now 11 matches away from equaling the record for the most number of consecutive wins, which is held by Czech pair of Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova.
