Sania Mirza opens up about the bias faced by women all over the world
Indian tennis queen Sania Mirza has spoken about the bias in the world against women, and has expressed her pain about living in a man’s world, in an exclusive interview to BBC Sport. The world number 1 doubles player also talked about the anger she experiences when asked about her personal life.
“We live in a man’s world. A lot of people might come out and say we don’t but the fact of the matter is that sometime when you are a woman you have to fight a lot harder for things. It has got nothing to do with this side of the world or India, it has got to do with the world,” she said.
The 29-year-old added that women in India mainly faced the problem of not being allowed to express their opinion. “So when a woman comes out and say that this how I feel, she’s either labelled as rebellious or too outgoing or career-minded. But there are no such words for men. When a man wants to go and achieve something, he’s labelled as so ambitious.”
Sania also revealed how she was constantly pestered in interviews about her personal life. “I feel it’s extremely disrespectful to ask someone when they are having a child. Just because I am a public figure, it doesn’t give anyone a right to ask me what happens in my bedroom. I really don’t think so,” she asserted.
Sania and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis have made people sit up and take notice of them with their incredible results this season. The world number 1 duo recently won the women's doubles title at the WTA Finals in Singapore, in addition to winning titles in Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, US Open, Wimbledon, Charleston, Miami and Indian Wells.
The Hyderabadi will be seen next in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), where she will represent the Indian Aces once again. Sania will be looking to win the IPTL title with the franchise for a second straight year.
