2012 Australian Open - Day 5

What's the story?

Sania Mirza has shut down a Social Media Co-ordinator of the Bhartiya Janata Party who questioned her nationality. The person in question challenged her national loyalties and was immediately put in his place by the tennis star.

In case you didn't know...

Sania Mirza married former Pakistani cricket captain Shoaib Malik in 2010. Since then, Sania has faced a lot of abuse and backlash from a small section of the population.

The Heart of the Matter

The person in question was responding to Sania's previous tweet, in which she had responded to the recent incident in Jammu and Kashmir where an eight-year-old girl was raped and murdered. Sania had shared a picture of a New York Times' tweet reporting the same news.

The social media coordinator responded to the tweet questioning her nationality, claiming she was no longer Indian since she married a Pakistani cricketer. He also asked Sania to tweet about such incidents only if she does the same whenever there is an issue with Pakistan.

Sania was quick to respond, immediately shutting him down and telling him to keep politics and nationalities out of discussions of such importance. She also tore apart his claims that she was no longer an Indian and asked him to looked beyond nationality, religion, and caste and find a little strand of humanity within himself.

What's next?

Sania's strong message will certainly resonate around the country. The tennis player has been dragged into such horrendous debates far too long and she has to keep shutting down trolls.

Author's take

A lot of people try to involve religion, caste, and nationalities into every discussion and debate that they can. In the past, sportspersons such as Sania Mirza have been dragged into these dirty discussions as well. Hopefully, her strong message will ensure that moving forward no one has to face a similar situation.
