Denis Shapovalov will look to end the 2024 season on a high at the 2024 Serbia Open when he faces fifth-seeded Nuno Borges in the second round. The Canadian player has an even 22-22 record in 2024, with no titles so far. He did enter the event in Belgrade on the back of a quarterfinal appearance at the Swiss Indoors, losing 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-7(3) to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Overall, some of the good results for the former World No. 10 include a quarterfinal run in Washington that ended at the hands of Ben Shelton. At the Serbia Open, Shapovalov won 7-6(4), 6-4 against Constant Lestienne, and 6-3, 6-4 against Hugo Grenier in the main draw qualifiers. He started his campaign with a 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-1 win over Marton Fucsovics in the first round.
2024 has been a year of firsts for Nuno Borges. The Portuguese player reached a career-high ranking of 30 in September and won his maiden title on the Tour in July, winning the Swedish Open in Bastad, where he emerged victorious in a marquee final against Rafael Nadal, winning 6-3, 6-2.
Barring the title in Bastad, Borges also reached the quarterfinal at the Los Cabos Open (lost to Casper Ruud), and the Estoril Open (lost to Cristian Garin).
