Jannik Sinner vs Taro Daniel preview
No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner will look to get his campaign at the 2024 Shanghai Masters underway when he takes on Taro Daniel of Japan in the second round. The 23-year-old Italian has had an impressive 2024 season so far, winning six titles.
The World No. 1 has a 59-6 record so far this year 2024 and has a 39-3 record on hard courts. Two of his defeats on the surface have come against Carlos Alcaraz, with the most recent one coming at the recently-concluded China Open.
Sinner was the defending champion at the ATP 500 event and reached the final following wins over Nicolas Jarry, Roman Safiullin, Jiri Lehecka and Bu Yunchaokete. The Italian won the first set but Alcaraz bounced back to win a thrilling title clash 6-7(8), 6-4, 7-6(3).
Taro Daniel has had a disastrous 2024 season so far, winning just ten out of 32 matches. His best performance came at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where he reached the final before losing to Alejandro Tabilo.
After failing to qualify for the Japan Open, the World No. 93 entered the Shanghai Masters and faced qualifier Egor Gerasimov in the first round. The Belarusian took the lead in the match by winning the first set 7-6(5).
However, Daniel bounced back strongly and registered a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 win to register his first triumph in a Masters 1000 match since the Madrid Open.

Jannik Sinner vs Taro Daniel prediction
Sinner has a 90.8 percent win record so far this season. The Italian's career win percentage on hard courts is 78, but in the 2024 season, that shoots up to 92 percent. He has a total of 14 hard court titles in his career, five of which have come this year. However, after a grueling campaign at the China Open, it will be noteworthy if the Italian will have sufficient fitness.
Daniel, on the other hand, has had a very poor season, even though his only final has come on hard courts. The Japanese has an efficient baseline game and has a high rally tolerance. His stamina will be needed to cope with Sinner's aggression.
While the Italian is coming off a tedious China Open final, his current run of form has been impressive and he should not have much trouble beating Daniel.
