One of the first-round fixtures at the 2024 Shanghai Masters will see American Marcos Giron take on Australian qualifier Li Tu. Giron has not had the best results in 2024, as indicated by his 20-22 record for the season. He last played at the Japan Open, losing to second-seeded Hubert Hurkacz in three sets in the first round.
However, Giron secured his maiden ATP Title at the Hall of Fame Open, winning the final against Alex Michelsen. On hard courts, the World No. 47 reached the final of the Dallas Open, losing to compatriot Tommy Paul. He also reached the semi-final of the subsequent Delray Beach Open, losing to Taylor Fritz in that match.
Li Tu has played only 3 main-draw matches on the ATP Tour this year. Giron has reached two hard-court finals in his career. Besides the final appearance at the Dallas Open this year, the American player also reached the final of the San Diego Open in 2022, losing to Brandon Nakashima in the final. However, winning his maiden title on the Tour will give the American a lot of confidence for the rest of the year.
Li Tu is a player still trying to make a name for himself. At the US Open, he was able to win a set off of the World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz. The Australian has a good hard-court record on the Challenger and the ITF Tours, winning a combined nine hard-court titles in his career.
Given Giron's ranking and the fact that Tu has played limited tennis against high-quality opponents, the American will be the favorite to win the match.
