Stan Wawrinka vs Giovanni Meptshi Perricard preview
Three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka will square off against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round of the Shanghai Masters 2024.
Wawrinka's form has taken a beating this year, and he has amassed a disappointing 5-13 record for the season. He hasn't registered back-to-back victories either.
Wawrinka advanced to the second round of the French Open as well as Wimbledon and reached the same stage in Buenos Aires, Marrakech, and Estoril. He was knocked out by Mattia Bellucci in the first round of the US Open and started the Asian swing with an opening-round exit from the China Open.
Mpetshi Perricard claimed his maiden ATP title at the Lyon Open. However, he couldn't build upon his title-winning run and crashed out in the first round of the French Open.
The French youngster made waves at Wimbledon. He initially lost in the qualifying rounds and then advanced to the fourth round as a lucky loser. The North American swing wasn't as fruitful for him as he failed to win a match at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open.
Mpetshi Perricard started the Asian swing at the Chengdu Open and lost to Yannick Hanfmann in the second round. He then moved on to Beijing for the China Open and went down to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

Stan Wawrinka vs Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard prediction
With more losses than wins to his name, Wawrinka is having a year to forget. He's currently on a three-match losing streak and lost all of those matches in straight sets as well. Additionally, he hasn't won a match on hardcourts this year.
Mpetishi Perricard does have some decent results under his belt this season, though he has been far from impressive on hardcourts, with a 2-5 record on it. Thus, Wawrinka might have a slim chance to turn things around against his younger rival.
However, the highest-ranked opponent that Wawrinka has beaten this season has been World No. 64 Pavel Kotov. He will have to punch above his weight to get the better of Mpetshi Perricard, currently ranked 51st. Given their results this year, a win for the Swiss would be quite surprising despite his accomplishments.
Pick: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to win in straight sets.
