Shocking results from Wimbledon 2024 Day 5 ft. Emma Raducanu crushing Maria Sakkari's hopes
The Wimbledon 2024 continued to produce some shocking results on Day 5 of the competition. After the early elimination of Russia's Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev, the crowd at the SW19 was treated to some more shocking results on day 5.
Some of the WTA stars like Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff secured safe passage to the next round of the competition. However, all eyes were on the bottom half of the women's draw which included Britain's favourite Emma Raducanu and Ukrainian young star Dayana Yastremska. Some of the players have struggled to adapt to the overcast conditions at this year's Wimbledon and suffered shock exits.
Here is a list of three players that suffered shock defeats on Day 5 of Wimbledon.
#3. Paula Badosa beat (14) Daria Kasatkina 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4
Paula Badosa started her third-round match against Daria Kasatkina as an underdog. The Spanish star has struggled for form this year and looked set to be ousted from another Grand Slam after losing the second set against the Russian. However, Badosa mounted a memorable comeback to win the match in three sets.
Badosa won a tightly contested first set in a tie-break to steal a set away from the 14th seed. However, Kasatkina hit back by winning the second set, setting up a deciding final set in front of a packed house on Court No. 3.
In the third set, Badosa got an early break and managed to hold her serve to clinch the match in thrilling fashion. This win equalled the Spaniard's most successful run at Wimbledon, as she made the fourth round in London for the third time.
Paula Badosa will face Donna Vekic in the next round. The Croatian defeated Dayana Yastremska in the third round of Wimbledon (more details below).
#2. Donna Vekic beat (28) Dayana Yastremska 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 6-1
Croatian star Donna Vekic claimed a memorable win at Wimbledon as she defeated an in-form Dayana Yastremska in the third round. Yastremska started the match as a heavy favourite to reach the fourth round at the SW19 for the first time since 2019, however, her hopes were cut short by an inspired performance by the Croatian.
The first two sets were decided on tie-breaks as nothing could separate the two WTA stars. Vekic won the first set tie-break to take a lead in the match, however, Yastremska hit back by winning the second set tie-break. Vekic completely dominated in the decider by winning the set 6-1 and booking her place in the next round.
Vekic is set to face Paula Badosa in the fourth round in what is expected to be a blockbuster clash.
