Matteo Berrettini vs Dominic Stricker preview
Eighth seed Matteo Berrettini will square off against world No. 317 Dominic Stricker in the second round of the 2024 Stockholm Open on Wednesday, October 16.
Berrettini, who returned to the ATP Tour earlier this year after a long injury layoff, has enjoyed a strong season with 28 wins in 37 matches. The Italian has captured three titles in Morocco, Gstaad, and Kitzbuhel, and reached the Stuttgart final, where he lost to Jack Draper in a thrilling three-setter.
Berrettini last featured at the Shanghai Masters where he defeated Christopher O'Connell in the first round before falling to Holger Rune in the second, despite winning the first set. He kicked off his Stockholm Open campaign this week with a routine 6-4, 6-3 victory over compatriot Luciano Darderi.
Stricker, meanwhile, only began his 2024 season in June after spending the first half of the season on the sidelines. The Swiss player has made only six main-draw appearances since his return, with his sole victory coming in Winston-Salem against Federico Coria, before losing to eventual champion Lorenzo Sonego.
Stricker’s last ATP Tour match was at the US Open, where he lost in the first round to Francisco Comesana. He enters the second round in Stockholm following a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Aleksandar Kovacevic.

Matteo Berrettini vs Dominic Stricker prediction
Matteo Berrettini made an impressive start to his Stockholm Open campaign, displaying a high level in all aspects of his game—in stark contrast to his form on the hardcourts so far this year. He was particularly strong on serve, winning 89% of his first-serve points and firing 11 aces. He also excelled at the net, winning 83% of points, while racking up 21 winners throughout the match.
Dominic Stricker, on the other hand, was pushed to the limit in his opener but showed tremendous mental resilience to edge out a tight final set. Like Berrettini, Stricker was strong on serve, also winning 89% of first-serve points, but delivered an even more impressive 16 aces. The Swiss player went aggressive from the baseline, hitting 49 winners, though he also tallied 35 unforced errors.
Heading into their second-round clash, Berrettini holds the advantage with a stronger season record and significantly more experience. However, neither player has managed more than two consecutive wins on hardcourts this year, offering Stricker some hope. While the match promises to be a battle of big serves and powerful baseline hitting, the stats favor Berrettini to advance with relative ease.
Pick: Berrettini in straight sets.
