Denis Shapovalov will open his Stuttgart Open campaign against Frenchman Matteo Martineau in the first round on Wednesday, June 12.
Shapovalov returned to action at the start of 2024 after missing out on the second half of last year due to injury but has struggled to get going ever since. He holds a 9-14 match record so far this season and is yet to make it past the third round of any event. He showed glimpses of returning to his best form at the French Open, beating twenty-fifth seed Frances Tiafoe en route to a tight four-set loss to eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz in the third round.
Shapovalov heads into Stuttgart on the back of a first-round loss to Aleksandar Vukic in the Surbiton Challenger.
Martineau on the contrary has primarily featured on the challenger tour and reached the finals in Nottingham and Cherbourg. He is yet to feature in an ATP main draw match this year, after failing to get past qualifying in Montpellier, Casablanca, Barcelona and Paris.
Martineau opened his Stuttgart campaign in the qualifiers with an emphatic 6-4, 7-6(7) win over second seed Maximilian Marterer. He then came through in a three-set epic in the second round against compatriot Maxime Cressy to seal his berth in the main draw.

Denis Shapovalov and Matteo Martineau's first-round encounter promises to be an exciting one with plenty at stake for both players. Shapovalov has had a below-par season so far and will look to get it going with a deep run in Stuttgart. He's displayed his brilliance on the grass in the past and will be hoping it aids his speedy return to his best form.
