Eighth seed Roman Safiullin will square off against 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the 2024 Boss Open on Tuesday.
Safiullin started the season on a strong note by reaching the semifinals of his very first tournament, the Brisbane International. He knocked out Ben Shelton, Alexei Popyrin, and Matteo Arnaldi before going down to Holger Rune. However, it all went downhill for him after that.
Safiullin has won three more matches since his semifinal run in Brisbane. His next victories came at the Indian Wells Masters, the Miami Open, and the Monte-Carlo Masters. Since his second-round defeat to Novak Djokovic in Monte Carlo, he lost in the first round of his next four events, including the French Open.
Berrettini returned from a seven-month injury hiatus in March at a Challenger event in Phoenix, US. He came quite close to making a winning comeback but lost to Nuno Borges in the final. His first tournament on the ATP Tour was the Miami Open, where he lost to Andy Murray in the first round.
Berrettini tasted success at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Morocco, capturing his first title in nearly two years. The Italian couldn't sustain the momentum and fell to Miomie Kecmanovic in the first round of the Monte-Carlo Masters. It was another heartbreak for him after that as he had to withdraw from the Italian Open and the French Open due to an injury.

Having won only three matches in the last five months, to say that Safiullin is going through a rough patch would be an understatement. After losing most of his matches in straight sets, he showed some fight in his last couple of matches. The Russian pushed his opponents to a deciding set but came up short in the end.
Berrettini's tough luck with injuries continued as he suffered yet another setback following his title-winning run in Morocco. He will be keen to resume his winning ways in Stuttgart, where he's a two-time champion. He won his most recent title here in 2022.
Safiullin hasn't competed on grass that much in his career, though he did make the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year. Berrettini, on the other hand, is quite at home on the surface. His booming serve and heavy forehand are perfectly suited to dominate his opponent on grass.
While Safiullin's form is a concern, Berrettini is returning from another injury break. If the latter has made a full recovery, then there's no stopping him given his prior record in Stuttgart and on grass.
