Alexander Zverev was frustrated after a decision went against him during the first set when the umpire adjudged that the German hit the ball back after it had already bounced twice. However, Zverev disagreed with the decision and started a rant towards the chair-umpire during the changeover.
"How on earth are you calling that? I got the ball completely clean?" Let me say something, you guys umpires are f***ing up the whole tournament this year. Completely. Brad Gilbert left fuming over the umpiring error during the Stan Wawrinka match at the Shanghai Masters
Coco Gauff's former coach, Brad Gilbert was left disappointed after a major umpiring error made the headlines during the Stan Wawrinka and Flavio Cobolli encounter at the Shanghai Masters.
With the match tied at two sets all, Cobolli got the only break of the final set early on in the decider. The Italian broke Wawrinka's serve during the second game of the third set but not without controversy. Stan Wawrinka won the first point of the game and should have led 15-0, however, the chair umpire, Carlos Bernardes, failed to update the scoreline. When Cobolli won the second point during the game, Bernardes updated the scoreline to 30-0 in favor of the Italian leading him to break Wawrinka's serve.
None of the players realized this mistake and Cobolli held on during his service games to win the match in three sets. Gilbert was left furious at the mistake which cost Wawrinka the match. The American called the situation 'inexcusable' before claiming he was 'dumbfounded' by the whole umpiring mistake.
"How does that basic mistake happen and was not corrected? Did not see the match. If this happened, inexcusable," Gilbert posted on his Twitter account.
