Tomas Berdych to discontinue his quest to hire Lendl as a coach
Tomas Berdych has come out and said that he will not be pursuing Ivan Lendl to be his coach anymore. Lendl had denied Berdych’s request earlier and Berdych has been trying to hire him as a coach for some time now, but has now given up his quest to pursue him.
Lendl, who had coached Andy Murray until the beginning of this year, stopped working with the Scot saying he did not want to commit the amount of weeks Murray required. Berdych, who is still looking to get his hands on a Grand Slam title approached the 8-time champion Lendl after the Shanghai Masters. Lendl denied Berdych’s request as he said he was “too busy”.
Tomas Berdych has been Czech Republic’s no. 1 player after Ivan Lendl, but the latter had a more successful career winning eight Grand slam titles and five Tour Finals. Berdych has participated in 5 tour finals as well, but has never won the title. "Yeah, I would say it's more likely that some of the small occasions, like we are five times a year probably, but he probably five times won it, so it's a bit different story," said Berdych with a smile.
Berdych had this to say on giving up his quest to hire Lendl as a coach – "But, no, I think working with him, that's over for now definitely," he said. "I mean, I don't know what has to be the change to change his mind. But it's how it is. I just respect his decisions. There is no reason to still be, you know, looking back. But you always have to look forward and keep moving”.
Berdych’s Tour Finals campaign started off on a very poor note, as he got thrashed 6-1, 6-1 by Stan Wawrinka.
