Tony Roche to coach Indian tennis players in December

Tony Roche coached Roger Federer between 2005 and 2007

The members of the current Indian Davis Cup team will be part of a special camp held by legendary coach Tony Roche in December in Kolkata. The Indian team consists of a few youngsters along with multiple Grand Slam winner Leander Paes.

Roche has trained the likes of Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer, Lleyton Hewitt, Pat Rafter in a coaching stint spanning over 40 years. The training will take place in ex-tennis player Jaydeep Mukherjee’s tennis academy in Kolkata from December 1 to 8. India put up a fight against the Serbian team in the recently concluded World Group Davis Cup tie after being 0-2 down.

Apart from Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna, other local talented players can also make use of this opportunity. It is learnt that Mukherjee is bearing the entire cost of the training programme himself, though Devvarman has agreed to help him with the costs.

Roche won his only singles major at the French Open in 1966. However, he was a very successful doubles player with 13 Grand Slams in men’s doubles and two Grand Slams in mixed doubles. The Indian fans can only hope for an improvement in performances of their tennis stars in future tournaments.
