US Open 2013: Day 9 round up - Men's and women's singles

Novak Djokovic

Men’s Singles

1. Novak Djokovic beat Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-0, 6-0

World No.1 Novak Djokovic was his dominant self when he routed Marcel Granollers in an easy straight sets victory. They had met once in the 2011 Australian Open, and it was Djokovic who wrapped up the match in three sets.

This match was no different as Granollers had no reply to the brilliance of the Serbian. Such was Djokovic’s dominance that he didn’t drop a single game in the last two sets.

Djokovic will now face Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the quarter final.

2. Andy Murray beat Denis Istomin 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4, 6-4

Defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain had to fight back from a first set loss to grab a quarter final spot. Murray struggled to find his form in the first set against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, finally losing the set to Istomin in a tie break.

However, Murray shrugged the cobwebs off and fought his way back in the second set which he took  6-1. From there on, he was at his best and won the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 and cruised to the quarters.

Murray will face Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the quarters.

3. Stanislas Wawrinka beat Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2

Swiss Warinnka produced a high quality performance to overpower Tomas Berdych in the fourth round match.

The ninth seed came back strongly after dropping the first set. After losing the first set quite easily to the Czech, Wawrinka improved his game and grabbed the next three sets while breaking the Czech’s serve six times in the process.

Wawrinka will clash against defending champion Andy Murray in the quarters.

Women’s Singles

Serena Williams

1. Serena Williams beat Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0, 6-0

World No.1 Serena Williams grabbed a historic double bagel win in her quarter final match against Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. It was the second double bagel in the history of US Open in the Open Era.

Martina Navratilova was the first one to achieve the feat in 1989 when she crushed Manuela Maleeva in the quarter final.

As the scoreline suggests, the Spaniard had no answer to the big hitting and quality tennis of the American. Williams might be getting used to grabbing bagel sets as she already has 23 of them this year.

Williams has now set up a semi final clash with Li Na of China.

2. Li Na beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2

World No. 5 Li Na of China had a tough time in her quarter final match against Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.

Na won the first set 6-4, but Makarova took Na to tie break in the second set and stretched the match to three sets after taking the second set tie breaker.

However, Na proved too tough an opponent for the World No. 24 as the former took the final set 6-2 and booked her place in the semi final.

Li Na will face Serena Williams of USA in the semifinal.
