Alex de Minaur vs Marcos Giron preview
Tenth seed Alex de Minaur will open his campaign against the USA's Marcos Giron in the first round on Tuesday, August 27.
De Minaur boasts an impressive 36-12 match record and two titles heading into the US Open. He started his season with a fourth-round finish at the Australian Open and a run to the finals in Rotterdam, where he lost to Jannik Sinner. He won the Mexico Open for the second time in his career with an emphatic victory over Casper Ruud in the final. A relatively subdued clay court swing finished on a high with a quarterfinal appearance in Paris.
He had a great grass court season, securing his second title of the year at the Libema Open by defeating Sebastian Korda. He was in blistering form at Wimbledon but was unfortunately forced to withdraw before his quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic due to a hip injury. That injury has kept him sidelined ever since, and he has not played a singles match since Wimbledon.
Giron, meanwhile, has a 20-20 record for the season and has won one title so far, the Newport Hall of Fame Tennis Championship, defeating compatriot Alex Michelsen. He reached the finals in Dallas and the semifinals in Delray Beach in consecutive weeks earlier in the year, losing to Tommy Paul in the former and Taylor Fritz in the latter. Giron has a 1-3 record in Grand Slams this season, with his only win coming at Wimbledon against Henry Searle.
Alex de Minaur vs Marcos Giron head-to-head
Marcos Giron leads Alex de Minaur 3-1 in their head-to-head. He won their previous encounter 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) at the 2021 Sofia Open.

Alex de Minaur vs Marcos Giron prediction
Alex de Minaur heads into his match against Giron without having played a singles match since Wimbledon due to a hip injury. Despite this, his hardcourt form this year has been excellent, and he will be hoping to quickly return to his best.
Giron has also impressed on hardcourt this year, with his best results coming on the surface. His form heading into the US Open has been poor, having lost in the openers of both the National Bank Open and the Western & Southern Open.
De Minaur's rank and record on tour this season should see him comfortably make it through this contest. Though Giron leads their head-to-head at the moment, the two haven't faced each other since 2021 and the Australian has improved leaps and bounds since. We could very likely see a tight match given de Minaur's lack of match practice off late, but there is no doubt that he will eventually come up trumps.
Pick: Alex De Minaur to win in four sets.
