Fourth seed Alexander Zverev is set to open his US Open campaign against compatriot Maximilian Marterer in the first round on Monday, August 26.

Zverev enters New York with a 52-16 match record for the season. He began the year by reaching the semifinals in Melbourne, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev after being two sets up.

The German then advanced to the semifinals in Los Cabos but suffered a surprising defeat to Jordan Thompson. In Indian Wells and Miami, he made it to the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, losing to Carlos Alcaraz and Grigor Dimitrov.

The 27-year-old had a slow start to the clay season but finished strongly, winning the title in Rome and finishing as the runner-up in Paris after a five-set battle with Alcaraz. During the grass court swing, he reached the semifinals in Halle and the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Zverev also reached the finals of the Hamburg European Open but lost to Arthur Fils in another close three-set match. On the American hardcourt swing, he made it to the quarterfinals and semifinals in Montreal and Cincinnati, losing to Sebastian Korda in the former and Jannik Sinner in the latter.

Marterer in stark contrat has had a challenging season on tour, with a 3-13 win-loss record. His scored his first victory only at the French Open against Jordan Thompson. At the Olympics, he won his first-round match against Serbia's Dusan Lajovic but was defeated by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round. His only other win on tour was at the German Open, where he triumphed over Kwon Soon-woo.

Marterer kicked off his US Open campaign in the qualifiers as the fifth seed. He secured a couple of routine victories over American players Jack Kennedy and Patrick Kypson in the opening two rounds before he was defeated by another American, Mitchell Krueger, in the final round of qualifying. Despite this, he gained entry into the main draw as a lucky loser after Emil Ruusuvuori withdrew from the tournament.

Zverev has had a relatively strong season so far but has often faltered in the final stages of tournaments. His form on the hard courts has been good, though it has lacked consistency. Marterer, on the other hand, has barely featured on tour this season and has a poor record in whatever few matches he's played. He is yet to pick up his first win on the hardcourts, with the others coming on clay and grass.

Zverev heads into this encounter as the clear favorite, given his experience and general form in the early stages of tournaments. His superior record on the hardcourts should also work in his favor as he looks to get off to the perfect start in his quest for a maiden slam. Marterer, meanwhile, will have to be perfect in every department from the get go and attack the net regularly if he is to have a chance of causing the upset.

Pick: Zverev in straight sets.
