Daniil Medvedev vs Flavio Cobolli preview
Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev will take on 31st seed Flavio Cobolli in the third round of US Open 2024. Medvedev has won 37 out of 50 matches so far this season, having reached the finals of the Australian Open and the Miami Open. The American entered the US Open after suffering opening-match defeats at the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Open.
At the US Open, Medvedev looked a bit rusty as he took four sets to get past Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in the first round, eventually prevailing in 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. The fifth seed then had a much more comfortable 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Fabian Marozsan in the second round.
Flavio Cobolli has won 30 out of 52 matches so far this season, most notably reaching the final of the Citi Open. Before the US Open, the Italian competed at the Cincinnati Open, where he reached the round of 16 before losing to Hubert Hurkacz.
At the US Open, the 31st seed defeated James Duckworth of Australia in four tight sets in the first round. Here, he faced Zizou Bergs and lost the first set 4-6. Cobolli staged a fightback to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 and reach the third round of the US Open for the first time in his career.

Daniil Medvedev vs Flavio Cobolli prediction
In his match against Marozsan, Medvedev could only make 47 percent of his first serves, making 10 double faults. The Russian, however, won 67 percent of the first serve points, and was proficient while returning, winning 71 percent of the points on the opponent's second serve. The former World No. 1 hit 34 winners in three sets to win the match.
Against Bergs, Cobolli won 78 percent of his first serve points, hitting 39 winners past his opponent. However, the Italian could only win 39 percent of the return points in the match and made 39 unforced errors in the entire match.
Serving will be key in the upcoming match for determining the result. Medvedev needs to improve on his first serve and reduce the double faults, and Cobolli needs to be on his toes, as Medvedev is one of the best returners on Tour. However, given the Russian's track record in New York, as a former champion and two-time Runner-up, the fifth seed will be a favorite for the match.
