Top seed Jannik Sinner will continue his quest for a maiden US Open title against 14th seed and home favorite Tommy Paul in the fourth round on Monday, September 2.

Sinner kicked off his campaign in New York against American Mackenzie McDonald. He was slow to get off the blocks and lost the first set, but he accelerated proceedings thereafter and ultimately secured a comfortable 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 victory. He was much more convincing in the second round, facing another American, Alex Michelsen, winning decisively with a score of 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.

Sinner's best performance so far came in the third round against Christopher O'Connell. He dominated in every aspect of the game and from all areas of the court en route to a thumping 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory in just one hour and fifty-three minutes.

Paul began his campaign with a first-round match against Lorenzo Sonego. Despite losing the third set, he secured a 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory. In the second round, he faced Max Purcell, dominating the match until Purcell retired in the third set, giving him a 7-5, 6-0, 1-0 win.

Paul faced big-serving Canadian teen Gabriel Diallo in the third round. After losing the first set in a tie-breaker, he wrestled back the momentum to bag the next two sets comfortably. Diallo challenged him again in the fourth set, which also went to a tie-breaker, but Paul's experience prevailed as he secured a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory.

Jannik Sinner is now primed to win the US Open following the exits of Carlos Alcaraz and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third round. His impressive form leading up to New York has continued at Flushing Meadows, where he has been flawless up until now bar a minor hiccup in his opener. His serving has been solid, his returning dominant, and his ever-improving net play has been highly effective throughout the tournament.

Paul, on the other hand, has struggled on hard courts recently and has been tested in two out of his three matches in New York so far. His return play has been strong, however, with an average of 50% return points won throughout the tournament. He isn't afraid to approach the net either and has been highly effective when doing so. His winner-to-unforced error ratio, however, needs significant improvement.

Despite their closely contested matches in the past, Sinner won their only hard-court encounter convincingly in straight sets at the National Bank Open last year.

He enters this contest as the favorite thanks to his superior form leading up to it and the US Open. He holds a 13-5 record at the venue with a quarterfinal finish his best result. Paul, on the contrary, holds a 8-6 match record at the venue with a run to the fourth round his best finish ever.

The faster courts at Flushing Meadows are also likely to benefit Sinner more than Paul and could be crucial if he continues to serve as effectively as he has so far.

Pick: Sinner in four sets.
