Sixth seed and Jessica Pegula will square off against 18th seed Diana Shnaider in a highly anticipated fourth-clash at the 2024 US Open on Monday, September 2.
Pegula kicked off her campaign in New York with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over compatriot Shelby Rogers, who was playing the last match of her career. In the second round, Pegula faced another American, former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin. The first set was tight, but a comfortable second set saw the World No. 6 secure a routine 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory.
In the third round, the American faced Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Pegula weathered an early storm from the Spaniard to win the first set. In contrast, the second set was one-sided in favor of Pegula, even though the scoreline was the the exact same as the first set. Pegula won the match 6-3, 6-3.
Shnaider opened her campaign with a 6-0, 6-1 thrashing of Nadia Podoroska in the first round. She maintained her strong form in the second round, defeating the tricky Clara Tauson 6-4, 6-4.
Up against former US Open semifinalist Sara Errani in the the third round, Shnaider played some of her best tennis, outmuscling the Italian for an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 victory.
