Madison Keys vs Maya Joint preview
Fourteenth seed Madison Keys will square off against qualifier Maya Joint in the second round of the 2024 US Open on Wednesday, August 28. The winner of the match will face either 33rd seed Elise Mertens or Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.
Keys entered New York with a 20-9 match record for the year, triumphing at the Internationaux de Strasbourg after defeating compatriot Danielle Collins in the final. Before the US Open, she played only one match at the Canadian Open, where she was forced to retire midway through the final set due to a hip issue. This was her second injury of the year; after a leg injury sustained at Wimbledon kept her out for a month earlier this year.
Keys began her US Open campaign with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in the first round.
Joint entered New York with an impressive 50-19 match record, primarily competing on the ITF circuit. She had won two titles this year, a W35 event in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the W100 Bonita Springs Championship in the US.
Joint began her US Open campaign in the qualifiers as the 32nd seed. She started strong by defeating Maja Chwalinska 6-0, 6-3. Her second-round match against Iryna Shymanovich was much more challenging, but she prevailed in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-0. In the next round, she faced home favorite and third seed Hailey Baptiste and delivered some of her best tennis to secure a surprising 6-2, 6-1 victory.
In the main draw, Joint continued her strong performance with a 6-4, 7-5 win over German veteran Laura Siegemund.
Madison Keys vs Maya Joint head-to-head
Madison Keys and Maya Joint haven't faced off previously on the WTA Tour so their head-to-head currently stands at 0-0.

Madison Keys vs Maya Joint prediction
Keys looked solid in her opener despite having been sidelined by an injury leading up to the US Open. She showed no signs of rust and was aggressive with her shots, accumulating 17 winners. Her net play was also impressive, as she won 83% of the points when moving forward.
On the other hand, Joint has impressed at Flushing Meadows through all four of her matches, with only a minor hiccup in the second round of qualifying. She has been strong on serve throughout the week and hasn't hesitated to go to the net, a tactic that has paid dividends so far. In her first-round match, she was particularly good on the return, breaking serve 5 times out of 9 opportunities and winning 48% of total return points.
Given Keys' strong performance in her opener and her superior hardcourt record overall, she is likely to advance with relative ease. While Joint has been playing well this week, her level may not be enough to overcome the 14th seed, who is also likely to benefit from home support.
Pick: Keys in straight sets.
