Alexander Zverev vs Taylor Fritz preview
Fourth seed Alexander Zverev will square off against home favorite Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the US Open 2024.
Zverev commenced his campaign in New York with a four-set win over Maximilian Marterer and ousted Alexandre Muller in straight sets after that. He rallied from a set down to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 and set up a fourth-round date with Brandon Nakashima.
Nakashima snagged the decisive break in the eighth game of the first set to go 5-3 up and saved four break points in the next game to close out the set. Zverev was quick to regroup and claimed the second set for the loss of one game to level the proceedings.
The German continued to outplay Nakashima in the next two sets as well. He broke his opponent's serve twice in each of the next two sets to register a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win.
Fritz defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli, Matteo Berrettini, and Francisco Comesana in straight sets to reach the fourth round, where eighth seed Casper Ruud awaited him.
Ruud went on a three-game run towards the end of the opening set to clinch it. Both players had a few break point chances in the second set, though it was Fritz who eventually capitalized on them. He broke the Norwegian's serve in the 10th game of the set to take it.
The next two sets played out in similar fashion. Fritz raced to a quick 3-0 lead in the third and fourth sets and maintained the headstart to secure a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win.

Alexander Zverev vs Taylor Fritz prediction
Both players overcame a one-set deficit to reach the quarterfinals here for the second year in a row. Fritz dropped his first set of the tournament against Ruud. He won 84 percent of his first serve points and blasted 56 winners against 36 unforced errors.
As for Zverev, his win over Nakashima was his third four-set win this week. He put up some great numbers as well, winning 88 percent of his first-serve points and firing 51 winners in contrast to 33 unforced errors.
Fritz and Zverev are familiar rivals as this will be their 10th career meeting. The American needed five sets to win their previous duel at Wimbledon a couple of months ago.
While Zverev leads the overall rivalry, Fritz has a 3-2 advantage on hardcourts. However, the latter has never claimed two consecutive wins in this match-up and hasn't made it past the quarterfinals of a Major either. The German has a better track record at the Majors, and that experience could prove to be the deciding factor in helping him get over the finish line.
Pick: Alexander Zverev to win in five sets.
