Frances Tiafoe vs Grigor Dimitrov preview
The quarterfinals stage at the 2024 US Open will witnessing an interesting fixture, as 20th seed favorite Frances Tiafoe takes on ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the semifinals. The America has has quite a good run in Flushing Meadows, reaching the quarterfinals for the third year in a row.
The 20th seed opened his campaign with a victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic in four tight sets in the first round. He then reached the third round after his second-round opponent Alexander Shevchenko retired.
Here, the World No. 20 squared off against compatriot Ben Shelton in a rematch of last year's quarterfinal. Tiafoe was trailing after the third set but he bounced back to register a 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 win.
In the fourth round, Tiafoe faced Alexei Popyrin who beat Novak Djokovic in the previous round. After winning the first set 6-4, the American player trailed 3-5 in the second set with Popyrin serving for the set. However, he saved three set points and won the second set in the tiebreaker.
Popyrin kept his hopes alive in the match after winning the third set but Tiafoe was not to be denied, and he eventually won 6-4, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
Former semifinalist at the New York Major, Grigor Dimitrov has returned his best to the Big Apple. The ninth seed opened with a dominant straight-set victory over French Qualifier Kyrian Jaquet. Another comfortable victory followed for the Bulgrain when he defeated Rinki Hijikata in the second round. The World No.9 then defeated Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets in the third round.
Dimitrov had his toughest match when he played sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev in the fourth round. After winning the first two sets, the Bulgarian's level dropped and Russian improved his game to capture the third and the fourth sets. However, the former World No.3 kept his composure and won the match in the fifth set.

Against Rublev, Dimitrov won 80 percent of his first serve points, while hitting 17 aces. However, the 9th seed made 12 double faults. He hit 41 winners in the match but made as many as 67 unforced errors.
Serving accuracy will be key in the match. If both players serve like they did in their last match, Tiafoe will have the advantage due to his efficiency. Even though the Bulgarian is the higher-ranked player, with his current form and the crowd behind him, Tiafoe has a good chance of pulling an upset.
