Top seed Jannik Sinner will continue his quest for a maiden US Open title against 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in a showpiece quarterfinal encounter on Wednesday, September 4.

Sinner kicked off his campaign in New York with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 victory against home favorite Mackenzie McDonald. In the second round, facing another American Alex Michelsen, Sinner was much more convincing, sealing a dominant 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 win. He continued his impressive form in the third round against Christopher O'Connell, winning easily with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 scoreline.

Sinner took on 14th seed Tommy Paul in the fourth round. Paul began the match stronger, stunning Sinner with some breathtaking baseline play and earning a double break. An unfazed Sinner, however, gradually fought his way back, leveling the score at 4-4 after breaking Paul to love with a blistering forehand down the line. Paul had his chances in the tie-breaker, but Sinner's experience came up trumps as he sealed a tight opening set.

The pair served brilliantly in the second set and went to a tie-breaker with no breaks of serve. In a repeat of their first-set tie-break, Sinner narrowly won again by playing the crucial points better. Deflated, Paul struggled to maintain his high level of play, and Sinner took full advantage in the third set. With two breaks of serve, Sinner secured a 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-1 victory.

Meanwhile, last year's finalist Medvedev opened his US Open campaign with a nery 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Serbian veteran Dusan Lajovic. He then swept aside Fabian Marozan 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(5) in the second round before dismissing an inspired Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in the third round.

Medvedev took on Nuno Borges in the fourth round and got a strong start, breaking Borges's serve to love in the first game. With two more breaks of serve, he won the set without losing a single game. Borges faltered early again in the second set, giving Medvedev a break in the third game thanks to a double fault. Borges failed to hold serve again in the set, allowing Medvedev to take a 2-0 lead.

Borges surprised Medvedev at the start of the third set by breaking serve in the third game with some fearless baseline hitting. However, Medvedev quickly broke back in the next game, which lasted nearly 10 minutes. From that point on, it was one-way traffic as Medvedev went on to secure a comfortable 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 victory in just one hour and fifty-one minutes.

Jannik Sinner has been a formidable force on the American hardcourts this season and has generally enjoyed great success throughout the year. Four of his five titles this season have come on hard courts, and he boasts an impressive 32-2 record on this surface so far. His only losses have been Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells and Andrey Rublev in Montreal.

Medvedev has historically played some of his best tennis on hard courts, but he hasn't enjoyed as much success on the surface this year, holding a modest 22-6 record heading into their contest. He has yet to win a title this year and has lost in the Melbourne and Indian Wells finals. Despite a subpar season leading up to New York by his high standards, he has been in impressive form at the 'Big Apple.' Medvedev has returned to his formidable best on serve and looks like a real force to be reckoned with going forward.

The pair have played some of their best tennis against each other and we can expect another classic between them. They've already faced off twice in Grand Slams this year, with Sinner winning the finals at the Australian Open and Medvedev in their quarterfinal clash in Wimbledon.

The fast hard courts at Flushing Meadows will aid both players, and we can expect to see plenty of big hitting. Serving well and making early inroads on returns will be crucial.

Sinner's impressive record leading up to the contest and throughout the year gives him the edge. However, Medvedev's strong performances in New York will boost his confidence heading into the match.

Pick: Sinner in four sets.
