Tommy Paul vs Gabriel Diallo preview
Fourteenth seed and home favorite Tommy Paul will lock horns with Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo in a highly anticipated third-round clash at the 2024 US Open on Saturday, August 31.
Paul began his US Open campaign with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Winston-Salem champion Lorenzo Sonego. In the next round, he faced Australia’s Max Purcell.
The first set was closely contested, but Paul gained the advantage in the 11th game which proved enough. The second set was one-sided in favor of the American, who won without losing a single game. Paul was leading 1-0 in the third set when Purcell called for the physio and then retired, giving him a 7-5, 6-0, 1-0 victory.
Diallo began his campaign in the qualifiers with victories over Sho Shimabukuro, Titouan Droguet, and Valentin Royer. He then secured his first-ever Grand Slam main draw win by defeating Spain’s Jaume Munar in four sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In the second round, Diallo stunned 24th seed Arthur Fils with a 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4 victory in a match marked by an extremely high level of serving from both players.

Tommy Paul vs Gabriel Diallo prediction
Tommy Paul heads into this encounter after some good performances in New York, despite having a subpar run leading up to the final Major of the year. In his previous encounter at the Slam, he was exceptional on serve, winning 86% of points behind his first serve and hitting five aces. He was outstanding at the net, winning every point when going forward. Additionally, he struck 29 winners out of 69 total points won and made only eight unforced errors.
Meanwhile, Diallo too has been playing exceptionally and is currently on a 5-0 winning streak at the US Open. His lanky frame and powerful serves have been his greatest strengths, making him a formidable opponent going forward. He has hit 12 aces and won 77% of points on his first serve. He has also reaped rewards from the baseline, with 37 winners and a conversion rate of five out of 10 break-point opportunities.
While Diallo's impressive game is sure to challenge Paul, the latter should be favored to advance due to his greater experience on the big stage and strong performances lately. Although Diallo’s blistering play on the fast hard courts will test Paul, it may be a tall order for the young Canadian to overcome the more experienced player, despite his outstanding run at the event so far.
Pick: Paul in three sets.
