US Open: Djokovic in second round

New York, Aug 29 (IANS):

Defending champion Novak Djokovic beat Italian opponent Paolo Lorenzia 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of US Open tennis.

The Serbian won 79 of 114 points and finished with seven aces and 32 winners compared to zero and 10 for the Italian in the match which lasted for 73 minutes Tuesday, reports Xinhua.

American Andy Roddick fired 20 aces to dispatch compatriot Rhyne Williams 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The former World No.1 closed the first set with an ace at 141 mph, followed with an ace of 134 mph to close the second set and another ace at 127 mph to wrap up the victory.

“You really don’t see that shot,” Williams said about Roddick’s serve.

Fifth seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Karol Beck of Slovakia 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(2).

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic dismantled David Goffin of Belgium 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.

Eleventh seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro outclassed Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, seeded 18th, powered through Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 6-7(6), 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-2.

American Sam Querrey, seeded 27th, defeated Lu Yen-Hsun from Chinese Taipei 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.

Other players who advanced into the second round include 15th seed Canadian Milos Raonic, who overcame Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-3, 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Jimmy Wang from Chinese Taipei who stunned Croat Ivo Karlovic 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 6-1, 6-4.

Germany’s Philipp Petzschner, America’s Dennis Novikov, Spain’s Pablo Andujar also snatched spots in the next round.
