Venus Williams records her 700th Singles career win

Venus Willimas progressed through to the next round of the Chian Open after beating Julia Goerges of Germany in the second round 6-4 6-3 on Tuesday. The victory also a touch of significance attached to it as it was the 35-year-old's 700th triumph of her career in singles, CNN reports.

But interestingly, Venus was unaware of the feat and revealed her first thoughts after realising that she has such a huge number of matches.

"I was thinking, 'How long would it take me to get to 800 now?' Maybe that was my first thought! But it's been a great 700 wins along the way." The elder of the Willimas sisters  was quoted as saying by the official website of the WTA.

"I'm glad nobody told me before - I would have been a little bit nervous. It was a good match, a quality player. I had never played her before, so that was also an experience in itself,” she added.

 

Since turning pro in 1994 Venus has played a total of 888 Singles matches, winning 700 out of them and losing the rest 188. She hast her credit a tally of 7 grand Slam titles, which includes 5 Wimbledons and consecutive US Open titles in 2000 and 2001. She has finished as the runners-up in the other two Grand Slams- the French Open and Australian Open- in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

Venus also clinched the Gold in the Women’s Singles at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and has a combined tally of 46 Career titles to her credit.

She has also had an illustrious doubles career, having won 13 Grand Slams in Women’s Doubles and two titles in the Mixed Doubles category. She also has a fantastic record in the doubles at the Olympics as well, having won the gold medal at the 2000, 2008 and 2012 edition of the Games in Sydney, Beijing and London respectively.
