Video: Federer, Haas and defending champion Monaco, all win at Hamburg

Top two seeds Roger Federer, Tommy Haas and defending champion Juan Monaco go through in Hamburg.

First time back on a match court for Roger Federer after his shock second-round loss at Wimbledon.

And the world number five didn’t have things his own way against Daniel Brands who won the first set of their match at the German Tennis Championships.

The Swiss bounced back strongly though, using a new bigger racket to smash his way to the second set.

He broke his opponent twice in the decider to reach the third round.

Elsewhere, Tommy Haas outlasted qualifier Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the third round.

The second-seeded Haas wasted a 4-1 lead in the third set.
But he held serve and broke to clinch the match when Kavcic sent a forehand long.

Also through is defending champion and 5th seed Juan Monaco. The Argentine beat France’s Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4. A stunning rally to end the match.
