Video: Jurgen Melzer wins Winston Salem Open
Frenchman Gael Monfils was forced to retire after suffering an injury in the final of the
Winston-Salem Open against Austria’s Jurgen Melzer on Saturday (24th August).
With the start of the US Open just 48 hours away, Gael Monfils walked out for the final of the Winston Salem Open hoping to continue a solid weak of tennis, but he left the court shattered.
The Frenchman found himself on the back foot early as his serve failed him and opponent Jurgen Melzer broke his first service game before the Austrian skipped away to a 4-1 lead.
There were no such service problems for Melzer who took the set with an ace, 6-3.
The second set continued the narrative of its predecessor as Monfils struggled and Melzer broke early again.
The Frenchman was clearly hampered by an injury as he staggered through the early stages of the second set.
Monfils took a medical timeout, but the Frenchman was forced to retire.
The win was Melzer fifth career title, though not in the way the Austrian would of hoped to claim it.
