Alexander Zverev vs Marcos Giron preview
Top seed Alexander Zverev will lock horns with Marcos Giron in a highly-anticipated second-round clash at the 2024 Erste Bank Open on Wednesday, October 23.
Zverev arrived in Vienna following a disappointing fourth-round loss to David Goffin at the Shanghai Masters. Despite his strong performances on clay, on which he won the title in Rome and reached the final in Paris, Zverev has struggled for consistency on other surfaces, often exiting events before the later stages.
Zverev began his Vienna campaign this week with a dominant performance against local wildcard Joel Schwaerzler. From the outset, Zverev controlled the match, breaking the 18-year-old twice to comfortably take the first set. The second set followed a similar pattern, with Zverev breaking serve in the third and fifth games to secure a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory in just over an hour.
Giron, on the contrary, entered Vienna following a strong showing at the European Open in Antwerp. He registered wins over Botic van de Zandschulp, Arthur Rinderknech, and Zizou Bergs before falling to Jiri Lehecka in the final four.
Giron's standout achievement this season was his title-winning run at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport. He also reached the finals in Dallas and the semifinals in Delray Beach, with a recent third-round appearance at the Shanghai Masters adding to his solid 2024 campaign. He opened his campaign in Vienna with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over compatriot Alex Michelsen.

Alexander Zverev vs Marcos Giron prediction
Alexander Zverev has had a relatively subdued second half of the season by his lofty standards, failing to reach a final since the start of the North American hardcourt swing. He has, however, made a strong start in Vienna this week and will be eager to build on that momentum.
Marcos Giron, meanwhile, is coming off an impressive semifinal run and has been in excellent form recently. Despite inconsistencies earlier in the year, Giron has enjoyed some of his best tennis over the past month. With a solid record indoors, he could pose a tough challenge for Zverev in their upcoming clash.
Zverev enters the contest with a 60-19 record for the season, including 31-11 on hardcourts. Giron, in comparison, holds a 26-24 overall record and 14-13 on hardcourts. Giron, however, has a better indoor record this year at 8-2, compared to Zverev's 2-1. Both players have started well in Vienna with Zverev possibly having the edge after a stronger opening match.
While it promises to be a competitive contest, Zverev is favored to come out on top thanks to his experience and superior overall record this season.
Pick: Zverev in straight sets.
